Energy Storage Systems

In many applications, the power that is generated from renewable energy sources such as wind or solar requires some form of storage. While the energy generated may be consumed directly as in grid tie applications, in most cases, projects will usually include various energy storage products that will supply the energy at a time that is convenient for the application. The most common energy storage device is the battery.

Battery life is determined by the number of discharge and recharge cycles. The more the cycles the longer the lifespan. They come in different sizes and voltage configurations.  Winafrique technologies sources and supplies some of the most technologically advanced energy storage systems for its projects.

The batteries are available in 2V, 6V or 12V. Their capacities will range from 460Ah up to 2000Ah. Various ampere capacities (Ah) and voltage combinations can be achieved depending on the site power requirements. Such battery strings provide for a long autonomy and may have a lifespan of up to 5 years depending on the application.

Some facts about batteries;

    • Flooded lead-acid batteries- are still the technology of choice for most applications.
    • Deep-cycle batteries required in professional installations.
    • Sealed batteries may cost up to 50% more but require no maintenance.
    • The typical efficiency for most batteries is ~75%, but only 40-70% of generation goes to storage - batteries only take net power after load.
    • Batteries should not be discharged below 80% Usable capacity is ~80% of total capacity.
    • Batteries should be equalized approximately monthly.
    • Batteries are connected in series to build voltage and in parallel to build capacity.
    • Batteries can be paralleled up to 5 strings without problems.

    WTL is the first company in Africa to procure a new energy storage technology known as the VRB- Energy Storage System (VRB-ESS) from VRB power systems Inc Canada. The VRB-ESS can economically store and supply large amounts of electricity on demand and is focused on stationary applications.

    This product is earmarked for installation into a telecommunication site in Kenya and is anticipated to have great results in reliability, storage and lifespan.
